Jaisham : Presidents Tale of Made up hero ??

The Day was January 8th. The place was the island of Hoarafushi, in Haa Alif atoll in the Islands of Maldives. A 20 year old young man attempted to assassinate the south asia's longest serving president Maumoon Abdul gayyoom but narrowly escaped when the 16 year old boy scout Jaisham's palm accidentally came in between. The story hit the headlines, and the whole world praised his act.
The talking point is what happened after that incident. President himself claimed that the boy was a 'National Hero'. In Maldives there has been people who did much brave and dangerous things yet their name has been hardly heard. Does someone make a 'national hero' when he accidentally puts his hand in between the knife and President ? Of course the boy's acts must be appreciated but i think its little bit of too much. The boy agreed that he never thought about it and it happened just out of thinking. Surely there are people who did much brave things than that in this country and people who deserves to be national heroes.
Some few years back, A man who was in a boat traveling with young women and children crashed into a reef and were about to sink when this man swam in the middle of night from his shipwreck area which was in nowhere to the nearest island completely far beyond sight with the help of two wooden boards from the wreck, In the end reaching the island and rescuing entire crew. What a wonderful heroism and bravery which has been forgotten in Maldivian history and that man deserved to be a national hero if Jaisham has to be a national hero.
Zaeema Ismail , Another Maldivian hero or else a heroine who won Asia's time magazine heroes award 2005 for her bravery and strength in coping with the physiological shock and helping her family get back to normal life after the disastrous Tsunami that took thousands of lives from Asia in the year 2004. She brought Maldives such a beautiful name and honor and i believe she too deserve government's and the presidents recognition.
I don't believe that Jaisham has to be in the line of Maldivian heroes such as Shaheedh hussain adam and Mohamed Thakurufaan. Shaheedh hussain adam, A brave soldier who gave up his life for the nation fighting against the terrorist attack on November 3rd 1988 or Mohamed thakurufaan, The man who wiped out the entire Portuguese garrison in Maldives and liberated this nation while Sultan Ali VI, Who gave up his Life fighting against Captain Andreas Andre, known as Andhiri Andhirin. These people dedicated themselves for the nation and some gave up their lives for it. How can Jaisham ever be called such a hero ?
Well let me give a more clearer idea. Suppose If I was the president and if I survived from assassination when bullet which was supposed to hit me, buy luck or what ever we say hits the bullet proof jacket i was wearing which blocked the way, What would you think of me if I make that bullet proof jacket as a national hero of the country just because it saved me, the President who was in ruling the country for 30 long years ? How stupid is that ? In this situation the only difference is that the bullet proof jacket was a human hand i wasn't the president. This is why i am saying that the boy scout doesn't deserve to be labeled as 'national hero' just because his hands came in the way. Of course he is a hero but i believe he cannot be called a 'national hero'.
It seems like president Maumoon is more like marketing himself from this incident and the boy scout labeling him as a national Hero on the government Media. Everyone knows that this year will see the nation's first ever multi-party elections where President Maumoon is set to compete with the opposition parties for the seventh term in a row. Will Jaisham be the Presidents tale of 'made up' hero for the upcoming elections just like Jessica Lynch became Pentagons tale of Fake war Hero ??

Thankyou,

I think Jaisham did a good job but it is more like Dictator is marketing himself for the upcoming elections. In the awards ceremony there wasnt a single bandage or dressing in his hand, If that was that fatal there should atleast be some sort of dress up. I too agree that he doesnt deserve being called a national hero !!!

hmm.. well, i guess some ppl are just jealous that they dsnt get a chance such as this to prove their bravery.. lemme ask a question.. does the Galantry award have to go for someone who died for the nation/protecting someone OR for people who sacrifices themselves to protect the nation/someone..?

Just cz U or someone else is angry at maumoon, dsnt make jaisham less of a hero.. Yea, his action might be just a coincidence, and i sure as hell bet that even if U [a scout who have taken an oath to protect the nation and withstand/respect their elders, president and country]were in that position, the same would have happened.. Mayb not on purpose..

Now lets picture 3rd November 1988.. Shaheed Hussain Adam was in duty, protecting the NSS HQ.. The enemies were targeting their attacks to that place.. They were trying to get through the gate.. If you were there and.. U knew that no matter what U do, there is just too many of them, so U cant stop them.. But, U could slow them.. So what would U do?.. Run away?.. I guess not, cz you got no chance of hiding, their rifles, shot guns and machine guns were already targeted on U.. So, at a moment like this, U would attack the enemies with all u got..

Shaheed Hussain Adam AND every soldier that fought on the black day are heroes.. Not because some died.. But because they joined the security force, with the intention of saving the nation from whatever darkness it is faced with!.. They became heroes cz they shed their blood and risked their lives to protect the nation.. to protect all of us!.. and they all should be national heroes for that reason.. I respect and salute the brave soldiers, including shaheed hussain adam and their families, for their actions.

So back to jaisham.. His actions were not on purpose, but his action slowed down the man, and protected the PRESIDENT OF THE NATION [whoever that is.. Just cz the president is maumoon, it dsnt make any difference, he is still a PRESIDENT, and should be given the same respect, even though some dont think so].. from an assassination attack.. the point is.. his action wasnt on purpose, but he defended the attack, didnt he?

So lets say.. the knife hit some other part of Jaisham's body, a severe attack.. and he passed away.. from what u'v said in ur article, he would become a national hero then.. But still, his action wasnt on purpose, and even now the president is untouched, only that he passed away through the process.. And i guess that is not how it shall be!.. even though U and the others dont believe that..

Jaisham IS A NATIONAL HERO.. what he did may not be the same thing as of other hero's of the nation did.. But his action too deserves this position.. I Respect and Salute you him and his family!..

So long pal, nice post.. but i got to say, u havnt considered all the facts.. This rnt very much like U, more like U hav heard something and just wanted to blog ;)..

Firstly Thank you sharing your Comment.
I am not Jealous at all. Infact by accident or out of his mind he did save Maumoon. Your comment seems i completely pointed that he never did anything. He did save the president !!!!!!! For your Question, I never mentioned about the galentry award that he got in my post neither did i complain or mention that he doesnt deserve the galantry award. This article was not about the galantry award he got !!!!!!!!!!
I only said he doesnt deserve being labeled as a national hero isnt it ?? Maybe because your a scout or what ever the case is i firmly believe that Jaisham should not be leveled with true maldivian National heros that i mentioned in the post. What ever you say the truth is this. Jaisham will never be like Shaheedh hussain adam or Mohamed Thakurufaan or Sulthan Ali. Jaisham maybe President maumoon's hero but remember maldives is not Maumoon's country alone to give the rank of a national hero to anyone he likes. Its the country of more about three hundred people. Some still living in so much of hardship after three years from the 2004 tsunami, While some loosing their lives to drug while some being tortured in captivity.
Thank you for remembering me of the oath. I dont remember the phrase 'president' come in the oath.
this is what i found when i searched the web for the oath.
++++++++++++++++
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.
+++++++++++++++++
See there is no president mentioned. It mentioned about the country. If someone who thinks loyally for the country what do u see ?? is the country the place we once saw ? i think i dont have to explain reasons why i am saying this.
Finally as a conclusion, You can call me what ever you want, Maybe i am trying to blog or maybe i am trying to get famous what ever you say it is, but maybe i am even thinking of my country and maybe i am one of the maldivian who tries to honour the true noble Maldivian national heroes. As the author of this post i dont regret at all writing this and i dont regret saying that Jaisham doesnt deserve to be in line with true Maldiviab national heroes, Ofcourse he is a hero but he just cannot be ranked a national hero. Remember, Shaheedh hussain adam, Mohamed thakurufan and sultan ali were not made as the maldivian national hero by maumoon abdul gayyoom. The people and their great service to the nation made them what we believe they are. Lets ask ourselves, What greater deed did jaisham do than the deeds and service of true noble heros of maldives for maumoon abdul gayyoom to name him as a national hero ???

Jaisham saving the presidents life by instinct is no different if Someone saved the life of Mugabe or Hitler for example.They wouldn't be heros of the nation..Infact A person who kills this leech that is stuck on his seat for 30 years and is gobbling us the countries wealth while most of us dont have enough for basic neccesities, that person who kills him will be a national hero..

nekro said...

1. I didnt say U are jealous, i told "some ppl"..

2. Gallantry award is the award given for national heroes. So, change that gallantry award part in my first par. to "Do we have to consider someone as a national hero".. if you find it hard to understand..

3. Yea, Jaisham cannot be leveled with the other hero's u mentioned, i guess i agreed with that even before. They gave their life to the nation. This guy just saved the PRESIDENT..

4. You'r not considering the fact that it was a PRESIDENT of a nation that he saved. You are just refusing to accept that he is a hero just cz the president that he saved was maumoon.. And, it isnt only maumoon who chose him as a hero, i bet atleast 50% of the nation did.. Ofcourse, ppl who are against maumoon are angry of the act.

5. Yea, president isnt stated directly in the oath.. But it states..
-------
To do my duty to 'Allah' and my country
To help other people at all times;
and to obey the Scout Law;
-------
President of a nation is the head of a country, which makes it a duty of a scout to respect him and protect by all means if he is faced with such a case. To help other people at all times, the president is an 'other people', i guess?. and the scout law includes respecting elders. So i guess even if it is not stated directly, anyone who rnt stupid would understand it. After all, he is the Chief Commisioner

6. Maumoon didnt cause tsunami, did he?.. as far as i knw he didnt.. Now, about the people who are living in hardship. Well, yea, he is the president, that does not make him a billioner, does it?.. how do U suppose him to rebuild each and every house that was affected in tsunami?.. it isnt his fault that the country is made up of 90% water.. He had tried his best to get helps and loans from different countries so that all the tsunami victims could be provided with new homes and facilities they need. We are not talkin about building 1-2 houses. It's 100+ houses (as far as i knw) that we are talking about here. So it would take time, and a LOT of money for that. it's been ONLY 3 years since then, and look at the amount of people who have already been provided with homes?.. you are just basing ur posts on one side man.. I knw there are people who are still living in temporary housing, i'v met and seen them. But as far as i believe, even they could try helping themselves. MOST of them are not working. Yea, they lost a lot, but it wasnt another one's fault, So i guess they gotta work a bit too, to get back on their feet. And, It isnt only maumoon's duty to help them. It is the whole nation. When something goes wrong, u cant just blame everything on him. Why cant rich people like Burumaa Gasim help out these ppl?.. He owns tons of resorts, but does he care that much?.. i dont think so..

7. Look at the changes that Maldives hav seen in the past 25yrs. I bet there wont be a single atoll that does not have atleast One Major School, One Big Hospital, and other services.. Am talking about Atoll.. cz, it is simply IMPOSSIBLE to create all these in each and every island, when there is more than 220 habitat islands in the country.

8. People uses drugs on free will. Nobody forces them to use. You CANT blame maumoon for that :S.. He isnt the one on the road distributing it. Yea, there was a time wen these stuff's were easily imported to Maldives, and cz of that ppl used them. But it is controlled now, and it wasnt maumoon who imported but other ppl who wish to put every blame on him..

I wonder why the freakin Maldivians could never appreciate anything done by anyone.. All they could show n talk about are the bad sides, never look at the good ones.. But in truth, there are a lot more good stuff!

Jaisham the boy scout, is a hero. National or whatever level. Its upto the ppl to decide. Infact he did save the President from a deadly attack.

President today is Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom but tomorrow it may not be him. Who ever the president is, will be a human being. Jaisham saved a human being. A Maldivian. A father. A grandfather. A Husband.
Well what about that. Jaisham did a brave thing.

Anonymous said...

come on ppl you guys are saying almost the same thing... he is a hero for saving the president... like the author of this article states or at least what i felt he states is its not up to the president to decide if he is a national hero or not... its up to the ppl... so let the ppl decide... for one i wouldnt call him a national hero... but i will sure call him a hero for putting his body in harms way to save someone... intentionally or not... he has guts you have to give him credit for that...

There is no doubt whether the scout is a hero, but the perception varies across the broad spectrum of people in the country. Some people think that he merely reacted to an impulse and saved an old man, which turns out to be is the likeliest possibility. Then there is Gayyoom and his posse, who obviously "thinks" he is a national hero, perfectly inline with the glorious martyrs of our past.

Looks like some is either delusional (thinking a puny kitchen knife can penetrate thousands of dollars worth of body armor and actually do him harm) or perpetuating the kid's undeserved grandiose in a ploy to reignite and accumulate interest. Given the approaching elections, which seems more likely?

Dictator Maumoon has played dramas ever since he became the president of the Maldives. People werent aware of what it is like during the time President Nasir stepped down. Somehow this guy was a bit educated and lived half of his life abroad and knew some tricks to be played in a low profiled community such as ours at that time. He became a prophet by reciting Quran in every sentence of his speech. He literally brings down heaven and hell to the eyes of the people and people started thinking he must be one of the close relative of prophets and a cousin of angels. In few days time, he played a drama saying there was a coup attempt organised by the ex president Nasir, hiring some terrorists from somewhere of the world. No one knows the truth so far and nothing was legally proved so far. People were taken out on the roads to protest which had no truth. People wrote songs and sang them on every corner of the island. People were excited to have such a fun organised by the existing governemt. People were enjoying the throwing of stones and bicycle lamps to those so called "baaghees". I saw people gathered at M.Loover (Kuwaa Mohadey's house) throwing tons of stones to the house while Mohadey's relatives were crying at the next corner of the house outside on the road. Perhaps, Shafiu (the current hero in DRP) was young but he would surely know how it was going on. He was one of the richest having cargo ships and other business. He became a poor man at that time and wasted whole life in jail and at house arrest. The game was in favour of the Dictator Maumoon and people had a lot of sympathy to their prophet at that time, which was engraved in the hearts of the youngs and older generation of that time. The young at that time, now became old and most of them still beleive about him as their prophet who is the only one who can lead the country. After sometime, he played another game, so called Haajaraa Luthufy and Sagaru Nasir bringing few sri lankan idiots to the country as a personal revenge against the government. Somehow the idiots failed and half of them were chased illegally in the waters of the Maldives. They fired at the vessel while civilian hostages were onboard. That was against international law. The Dictator knew the so called coupe attempt was organised far before the attack was given. I personally saw the gates of the national security of the Maldives having sand bags as barricades, I saw some of their exercises at dawn as we stood at the No.1 Jetty to go to airport every morning. This guy Dictator Maumoon knew about it and he waited for the drama to be played so he could win the peoples's hearts again. He then banned "fataas" and took away water guns and every kind of childrens fun out of the country. I saw tons of such fataas confiscated from the shop owners and being carried away by the police vessels, from the No.1 Jetty. The young generation of now, wont even know what fataas is. This Dictator will play such games over and over again and this time its a game with a kichen knife and some under 20 boys in a small island where no one knew how an electric fan operates. This event is now one of the biggest acheivements in the opinion of the Dictator's supporters and his party. Its a shame to the world scouts to give such an honour to someone who didnt know what it was all about. The badge or whatever the name is supposed to be given to heros who survive or do a lot of good deeds to a nation in a war or war like activity. This idiot dictator maumoon in the 21st century having some educated people in the country, still playing such dramas. The sad part is, a huge number of people dont understand this and still supports him. Its very likely he will get such support from the people and he will have an unfair counting on the polls and then again win the seat, which is sad to say but very likely still.
Thats about the game and the dictator who is also beleived to be a prophet by some people of the Maldives.

MAUMOON TOO IS A FREAKIN PRESIDENT!.. today someone writes some shit saying he did this and he did that, with a heading that says he's a dictator, "cz some fuckin guys dead in JAIL!".. as far as i believe, JAIL is a place that is made to give punishment for people, not provide another housing!.. sometime back, 3rd novemeber 1988, if it wasnt for his brave quick reaction to contact for help, maldives would have been overtaken.. that day, everyone praised him.. every single maldivian thanked him (ofcourse even that time there'd b ppl who wanted to take over presidency and fights for that, so except for them).. THE SAME THING MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN!.. but this time, it won't be Indian Forces that saves us, BUT hopefully OUR MNDF!, the one's that u people call GOLHAA and have given a bad name for doing their job!.. And even this National Force was created under Maumoon's precidency!.. Now u go n tellin the same bullshit that Jaisham is not a hero cz he saved MAUMOON.. what the fuck is wrong with maumoon?.. i dont find anything wrong with him.. it just the freakin thinkin of Maldivians.. there's no point in this arguments, cz none of u terds wud ever understand until u are faced with another war, and maumoon's security forces saves u.. its time for the ultimate truth.
The president did survive the incident due to Jaisham involvement( even it was by accident)so he can be called as a hero according to a acceptable level. on the other hand if the guy who attacked our President and got him assassinated then he 2 would have become a hero. Unfortunately to him for his failure , he became a terrorist. END OF THE STORY........

1)The government of Maldives is unconstitutional. There were no free and fair elections..So whoever ruling Maldives right now is a dictator not a president.

2) Saving the life of a dictator doesn't sound very heroic thing to do.maybe Jaisham is maumoon's hero..But he is is no way a national hero.

3) A person who gets rid of the dictator will surely be a national hero

For gods sake this post is not Condemning the acts of Jaisham ! He did a brave thing and saving a president has to be appreciated. But making him a national hero is too much. Maumoon abdul gayyoom is not the nation so that his savior should be a national hero ?? This nation is the home for 300,000+ people. Whats wrong with some people. I believe National heroes are people who serve the nation and people, National heroes are not people who serve only one specific person.
Maumoon, the man who says that democracy is the best for people, why didn't he stepped down after two terms of presidency just like basic rules of Democracy ?? Today look at our country. Our Nations Debts have risen. Our country is at stake. People are unsure of their safety in the streets,Gang Violence, Drug abuse, Prostitution, Traffic accidents why cant government take necessary measures ?? And then you say its not the responsibility of the government. Who's responsibility is that then huh ??
Every citizen of this country has to be loyal to this nation, Not Maumoon Abdul gayyoom. Maybe tomorrow he will flee from this country to Singapore or UK because he couldn't withstand the pressure of the international and local pressure, then again we the people of this country will fall into Pressure. Why are u trying to cover the mouths of people who speak the truth. How much is Maumoon paying for you guys huh ??? What ever the situation is, people like us, people who love this nation would keep on Struggling for the well being of this nation and Maumoon has to face this. We the people of this nation are more aware of whats happening and Maumoon cannot fool the people of this nation like he did before.

Jaisham, a hero for some maldivians and an idiot for others. The real truth is he is the people's hero for saving a God's creature, but the president's bad luck because he obstructed a great chance for the president to save him from a smooth depart from this world without facing what is going to come for him in a short period.

Jaisham maybe a hero but what I did not like was the comments Gayyoom made after the incident. He said that "even if we differ in opinion people should not go to the point of killing". This is not a matter of difference of opinion. Gayyoom has looted our hard earned money and this is the reason for frustration. I would not be surprised if goes in line with such people as Rajiv Ghandhi,Premadasa,Bhutto,Zia ul-Haqq. People will not loot our money any more.

Let me offer some hope to those who are hopeless. Everyone praised him because most of them are, I believe, most Maldivians are controlled citizens, which is now our worst enemy. Most Maldivians want political leaders or hero's whose behaviour matches the selflessness of the certain respectable heroic Maldivians who sacrificed their blood to this nation and to their people! Why is it that some of us still stand behind the actions of an administration abusing power for their personal or political gain, incapable of admitting its failures and trying to change course? Why?

The whole bloody thing was a SET UP! They say BOLLYWOOD’s stories are cheap compared to HOLLYWOOD. But I say our Maldivian FLYWOOD (or PLYWOOD which ever you choose) can come up with some real GARBAGE dramas.
What Jaisham said before doesn’t match up with what the police are saying and showed on the TV. In fact you can ask him again and again and his explanation of the event differs each time.
According to Jaisham’s report, he instantaneously acted and his hand got knifed. He yelled not to pull out the knife (would a brave hero beg for mercy) as it would cause terrible pain. But the assassin (so called – more likely to be another frustrated guy) pulled out the knife and went for a second attack.
There was no motion from a boy scout when the so called attack happened according to the snapshots shown by the police. But Maumoon was holding the “assassin’s” hand…?? According to Jaisham’s explanation the attack cam from like above his shoulder position or so (indicating the blade of the knife held by the “assassin” has to be close to his little finger.
BUT look at the pictures shown by the police….. The “assassin” is attacking from a down up position clearly (CONTRADICTING to Jaisham’s report!!!) showing how he held the knife (gripped in the position where his thumb is closest to the blade)….. IS THERE ANY LOGIC IN THIS????? OH and all this according to the police happened in a FRACTION OF A SECOND???? BULLSHIT!!!
What were his bodyguards (to whom an undisclosed amount of tax payer’s money goes for training!!) doing??? DAYDREAMING?? BIRD WATCHING?? ISLAND HOPPING??? I just cant believe they failed to identify a”potential assassin” whom according to JAISHAM “acted suspiciously” ???? Our boys in the blues must get training from boy scout from now if any of this is true..HAHAHAA
The police failed to answer to these anomalies on the press meeting and hesitatingly said that it all happened in a fraction of a second……???? WHAT GARBAGE!! Going into unnecessary out of context details like a “thread cut” and the president’s holy stomach 2mm “screatch wound”.
What about the pictures of blood stains on the president’s shirt shown by the police in the press conference as evidence??? There WASN’T a single drop of blood seen on the president’s shirt while he walked away from his “ordeal” according to the video footage. Blood stains fade away with time but will clearly and distinctively be seen when it is fresh and will be in CONTRAST on a light coloured shirt.…… HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT!!!! NO ONE CAN. BECAUSE IT IS ALL FAKE!!!
Can you imagine, Maumoon, a guy who cannot crap without the national tv taking a shot of him while doing it, would have a camera crew who just by bad luck MISSED to capture the actual event?????? “BAD LUCK” they say.. ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!! And that no for good so called president, his controlled TV, RADIO and his monkey police sold this story to the Maldivian people….
If anyone is to be awarded , it should be those who try their best to get rid of MAUMOON…. of cause in a DIPLOMATIC way.

Its funny how Maumoon made his hero a national hero. There are people who jumped into the tsunami to save others lives. And they are not national heroes. They risked their lives to save the some of them went there to save completely strangers.
I met a guy who went in building which was on fire in the recent fire from the garage to save a pregnant lady and a old women he dint even knew them he did it for sake of humanity but he is not known as a hero.

And regarding the the dictator what he did in 30 years in his dictatorship for this country. from where should i start? its been almost 3 years since the tsunami and their lives are hell. Of course its not Moumoons fault that tsunami hit this country. But to help them get over this incident the government should be fully responsible and if Maumoon is the head he should be fully aware of this situation and fully responsible for the survival of these people.

I had worked in the red cross regarding the tsunami and met a lot of its victims. And most of the people who were badly effected are the fisherman's but after this event they are scared to go in the sea for fishing some are even scared of the ocean. But the government has failed to give them proper therapy.

Maldives a country of less than 300,000 people with a gdp of us dollar 2000. why are there people suffering from the tsunami now ? recently the commonwealth in Maldives has announced that they have run out of budget and they will be stopping the tsunami rebuilding. But still there are people left without hoses food work.

the education system here sucks if u need a better education u have to to male and rent a apartment which is above your income. And one of the guys here has said that every atoll has got good hospital then why are they coming to Male' for treatment ? Or have to go to India or some other foreign country for simple medications.

And almost 75% of the youth are addicts because the government had failed to take proper actions. If it is tough to import these drugs how does they make way trough in? According to my knowledge for the addicts only in the capital they need almost three kg of brown sugar per day imagine how many stuffs are in here and how are they coming in . Well i must say the government has got some interest in doing this and keeping this going on. other wise this would have been stopped. a long time ago.There are simple ways to stop this like catch the addict and get to the source through him and cut down the source. but no here what the government dose is catch the addict and release him after weeks time. This is the truth and like people who scream for the justice and harmony are kept in jail or killed some how or sent to exile.

It is quite certain that he is trying to make his way through this time by using a boy scout for the presidency.
